Although the chamois is not in its original environment, it very quickly adapted to the Vosges mountains.
And it was in the Black Forest, where it lived until the 15th century, that it was first reintroduced in 1938. Eleven chamois from this Black Forest were then released in 1956 in the upper valley of the Thur ( Haut-Rhin) before others, originating in the Alps, were in turn injected to colonize the Alsatian and Lorraine slopes of the Vosges massif.
In the absence of natural predators, the chamois multiplied exponentially. And it is undoubtedly the reintroduction of the lynx (of which the chamois is the favorite prey), from 1983 which contributed to a gradual regulation of the herd.
